How can parents care for themselves while addressing their children’s fears during this this time? The current pandemic is forcing us into uncharted waters as caregivers to our children. It is important to understand we are all experiencing trauma related to COVID-19, whether we are directly or indirectly impacted. In addition, many of the behaviors you might be experiencing with your kids are a direct result of underlying fears and uncertainty. We will talk about types of trauma and the responses you might be seeing in both your kids and yourself. In addition, we will talk about how important self-care is as you continue to care for your family.
Parenting in Challenging Times: Building Confidence and Resilience through Relationships.
This webinar explores how communication and relationship skills are key to building confidence and resiliency. In addition to understanding the best ways to engage with others, we all have opportunities for success through working on our thoughts and self-reflection.
Parenting in Challenging Times: Conscious Discipline
What is conscious discipline, and why does it matter? Used for classroom management and social-emotional learning, conscious discipline is based on current brain research, child development information and age-appropriate practices. This approach teaches self-regulation skills, focuses on children's voice and empowers them to achieve behavioral goals. Benefits include creating healthy connections, improving impulse control and encouraging cooperation. Conscious discipline is an opportunity for us to better understand and change behavior, allowing us to effectively serve students' needs. Audra Olson will explain conscious discipline, drawing on her 30 years of experience as an educator and counselor in our Park Hill schools. Retired from the classroom, Olson continues to serve our students. She studied with the creator of conscious discipline, and she is working with our staff to bring these skills to Park Hill.
Parenting in Challenging Times: Building Resilience
Everyone faces tough moments in life, but experiencing trauma in childhood can lead to a lifetime of consequences. Building resilience in students is an important part of the Park Hill School District's goal to prepare students for college, career and life. Licensed professional counselor Angie Winkler will help us understand the science of adverse childhood experiences, including how they influence development from childhood into adulthood. Winkler has worked in the mental health field for more than 15 years and has expertise in crisis assessment and stabilization, complex developmental trauma, child and adolescent therapy, child welfare and adoption.

Parenting in Challenging Times: Anxiety, Stress and Your Child
If you are a parent, you might have heard your child say, “I am so stressed out." You might have seen them overwhelmed, anxious, moody and exhausted. You are likely experiencing your own stress and anxiety about raising a child. We frequently use the terms "stress" and "anxiety" interchangeably, but children’s stress and anxiety disorders are not one and the same. It is important to understand the difference and to learn the tools that you and your child can use to decrease stress and to manage anxiety. Dr. Jill Rosbrugh, child and adolescent psychiatrist from Parkville, unpacks the different faces of childhood worry, talks about the major causes of stress, and shares how to develop healthy and effective skills for handling these normal stressors. You will also learn what signs are red flags for an anxiety disorder and what steps you can take with your child to get help. Whether it is normal stress or an anxiety disorder, it is big deal to your teen.
Parenting in Challenging Times: Is It Depression or Just Teen Angst?
With almost 11 percent of adolescents and two percent of elementary school-aged children suffering from depression, this very debilitating mood disorder is the most common mental illness among youth. Sadly, many teens will go undiagnosed and untreated, which can lead to a wide array of other psychiatric conditions, including substance abuse, anxiety, school problems or worse — thoughts of suicide and self-harm. Because moodiness, irritability and isolation are often hallmarks of teenage growing pains, it can be hard for a parent to realize when his or her child is in need of help. At earlier ages, kids today have to cope with so much stress from school, social media, bullying, sexual identity issues, violence and exposure to traumatic events. When do isolation, moodiness, social media obsession, eating issues, poor sleeping habits or troubles at school indicate a need to take immediate action?
Parenting in Challenging Times: Safeguarding Our Children in Challenging Times webinar
No doubt today’s children and teens are exposed to extraordinary stresses at earlier ages, and they sometimes struggle to cope with social media, school violence, bullying, depression, substance abuse, sexual identity and exposure to traumatic events and losses. In this webinar, dynamic, nationally recognized speakers Scott Poland and Richard Lieberman empowered parents by directly addressing some of the most difficult questions about raising children.
Parenting in Challenging Times: Raising Resilient, Drug-Free Youth webinar

Alcohol Abuse
A growing number of teens have started abusing alcohol in the past several decades; some do so from peer pressure, wanting to experiment or to escape reality. While some symptoms are easy to identify, others may not be so apparent. Warning signs in teens, no matter how minor they may seem, should be taken seriously and treated immediately. These links provided will help shed some light on how to tell if your kid is experimenting with alcohol and how to help them stop before it becomes a problem.

Community Resources
PARK HILL COMMUNITY ALLIANCE FOR YOUTH PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Park Hill Community Alliance for Youth is a coalition of individuals and agencies who are deeply concerned about the health and safety of all youth within the Park Hill area. As substance use and mental health needs rise, we are looking to increase the efforts and the impact of this grassroots group.
While there is incredible need to provide additional intervention and treatment services, we believe that there is power and opportunity in building resilience in youth and preventing these disparities before they take root. With enough community buy-in and collaboration, we hope to attain federal support through the Drug Free Community Support program that could provide $1.25 million for prevention programming in our community over the next 10 years.
Please join us for one of our upcoming meetings where we will learn, collaborate, plan and act together to protect area kids. If you can’t join us on these dates, please do not hesitate to contact us for additional information about how you can get involved.
